The drive shaft mainly consists of a shaft tube, sliding sleeve, and universal joints. Although its structure appears simple, it bears substantial loads. The sliding sleeve automatically compensates for minor distance changes between the transmission and the drive axle. The universal joints ensure flexibility in the angle between the transmission output shaft and the drive axle input shaft, enabling constant-velocity power transmission between the two shafts.

Notably, the longer the vehicle wheelbase, the longer the drive shaft, which still relies on cross universal joints to adjust angles.
As the name suggests, a cross joint is a cross-type universal joint, composed of a cross shaft, cross bearings, flange yokes, and other components. In addition, the outer side of the drive shaft is equipped with a tubular sealing boot with two grease seals, forming a fully sealed, well-lubricated space for the sliding sleeve. This protects against external dust and corrosion, while grease enhances operational strength and prevents rust.

Key point: The drive shaft connects the transmission and the input/output shafts of the rear axle. Due to chassis design, the transmission and rear axle are not on the same horizontal plane. The truck chassis features an elastic structure, so the rear axle moves with road irregularities, and both wheels and drive axle exhibit vertical bounce. The drive shaft operates at a certain transmission angle, with dynamic changes in both static and running conditions. Such adaptive adjustment is made possible by the universal cross shafts.

I. Drive Shaft Structure
The drive shaft consists of a shaft tube, sliding sleeve, and universal joints.
The sliding sleeve automatically adjusts distance changes between the transmission and drive axle.
The universal joints accommodate angular changes between the transmission output shaft and drive axle input shaft, ensuring constant-velocity transmission.

II. Drive Shaft Function
The drive shaft is a key component in the automotive transmission system for power delivery. Together with the transmission and drive axle, it transfers engine power to the wheels, generating driving force for the vehicle.

III. Operation and Maintenance
To ensure normal operation and extend the service life of the drive shaft, observe the following guidelines:
Do not start the vehicle in high gear.
Do not release the clutch pedal abruptly.
Do not overload or overspeed the vehicle.
Regularly inspect the operating condition of the drive shaft.
Frequently check the tightness of the drive shaft hanger, damage to support rubbers, looseness of connections, and deformation of the drive shaft.

To maintain dynamic balance, regularly check whether balance weights are detached. New drive shaft assemblies are supplied as matched sets. When installing, observe assembly marks on the sliding sleeve to ensure flange yokes remain in the same plane. During disassembly for maintenance, mark the sliding sleeve and flange shaft to preserve original assembly alignment.

Grease universal joints, sliding sleeves, and center supports every 6 months or 20,000 km: use Lithium Base Grease No. 3 in summer and No. 2 in winter, until fresh grease overflows.

Periodically retighten drive shaft fasteners, especially flange yoke and center support bracket bolts, to specified torque.

To diagnose resonance-related faults caused by the drive shaft: jack up the drive wheels, secure the steering axle with blocks, start the engine to reach resonant speed, and check for excessive drive shaft oscillation. If no abnormal movement is observed, the drive shaft is not the cause. If vertical or lateral wobble occurs, remove the shaft for inspection and dynamic balancing; replace the drive shaft if balancing is ineffective.
